Jaspa – It seems we can make a difference if only we make enough noise. In my last blog I talked about the threat to the Serengeti, and the Great Migration in particular, because of the Tanzanian Government’s plan to build a highway across the northern part of the National Park.
Well, after an extended period of stubbornness in the face of global alarm at the proposal, the Tanzanian Government has finally backed down. Tarmaced roads will still be built to the edge of the park, but they will remain dirt tracks through the park itself.
This issue may well come up again in the future, but for now at least, the Great Migration is safe.
I for one would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all the governments, organisations and individuals who helped keep my homeland the way it’s meant to be!
